Macronutrients
What are macronutrients.? With all new meal plans, you may hear the term Macros which refers to macronutrients. Macros are an essential nutrient. Essential nutrients are nutrients that are absolutely necessary and of extreme importance in order for the body to function at optimal levels. These are nutrients that the body cannot synthesize in large enough quantities on its own and must be sourced from your diet.
Macronutrients can be broken down into three categories proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Each of them is measured in calories or kilojoules, and provide the body with energy but aid in different processes within the body.
Protein is used as a source of energy for the body. It has many functions including tissue repair and production, hormone production, enzyme production and immune function. A regular and moderate quantity of protein is needed by the human body to enable these functions to occur.
Carbohydrates are the immediate source of fuel for the body as they can be broken down quickly into their most simple form (monosaccharides) and utilised for energy. When carbohydrates are consumed in large amounts the excess carbohydrates are converted to fatty acids and stored as fat. This is then used as a backup source of energy when there is no immediate supply of blood glucose, this is performed through a process called gluconeogenesis. Carbohydrates also assist with digestive health, feeding gut bacteria, regulating bowel movements, optimizing cholesterol levels, regulating sugar levels, and decreasing the risk of bowel disease.
Fats, also known scientifically as lipids, primary role relates to the structure of all cells as well as numerous other functions including aiding in hunger regulation, providing the body with energy and storing energy, assisting in nerve function, storage of vitamins, maintaining healthy cholesterol, and forms the outer structure of cells. It is fundamental to the health of hair, skin and nails, brain function and development, aids in blood clotting, helps reduce inflammation, increased immunity, and decreases depression and anxiety.
